SAT essay

All of the media that we have today does determine what is important to our society. They do this by choosing what channels are put on, what shows are on those channels and by even the commercials tht are showed during the breaks between the shows. By showing the young inpresionable minds of the youth of our nation with ideas and stuff that the media wants us to see causes our nation to follows.
First off the channels thhat one has to watch are only a very limited number, of those even fewer of them are news or factual related such as the local news, national news (CNN) and other factual shows liuke the discovery channel and national geographic channel. Now these channels have the choice to put whatever they want to show which our young children must think is all true but it is in fact only one point of view or a set of points of view. Also one is not allowed to watch what they want but what the producers want them to watch. So one might not get the whole truth but actually only a version of the truth. The media has the control to show what they want when they want to which means that they can choose what is important to the society
An example of this is when my school started bringing to light the genocide in Sudan and Darfor. I am a guy who watches the news a lot and I almost never see any mention of this war at all and I began to think why is that. It is because the media (T.V.) as well as newspaper don't deem it important. Instead news about what people wore to the oscars is top headlines. Also just like the Darfor genocide the media dosn't show the whole truth about the war in Iraq. Sure one or two of our soldiers die but they never show the goodness that is being done there too. The lives saved, the people helped and the number of enemies dead. The cause of the hatred for the war without showing how much good has been done. THis was evident in a story that I listened to in NPR's program this I believe. One marine said that he believed in random acts of kindness something thast the media never really showed in the newscast that they sentt back. All the help that they did with the medicine and all that. Often the good stuff is condidered boring or irrelevant to the media so they don't show it and the nation thinks that all that goes on there is death.
Therefore the media does determine who and what goes into the newspapers, T.V. chanels and ultimatly what is important to the society and nation that is the U.S. of A.
